From our Analysis:

From our research and review, it is our opinion that the Fuel Pro Max chip module is yet another of the numerous light blinker scams. It may also cause ECU damage, so we suggest avoiding it at all costs. You definitely want to pass on this one!

Scam!

Company Profile

The manufacturer is unknown. You can find it on eBay. It did not appear that they had a website at the time of this review. The product case looks almost identical to the Nitro OBD light blinker scam, so we are already especially suspicious of this product. Let’s see what it actually does.

Cost

The cost at the time of this review on eBay for the Fuel Pro Max chip was $34.99 USD. This price is very low to be a genuine performance chip. The seller’s other items and feedback do not help – they also sell Nitro OBD scam chips.

Product Appearance

The module comes in the all too familiar yellow case shown above.  Just like most scam chips, the seller claims it fits numerous year vehicles – so it is obviously not custom programmed for a specific vehicle:

Fits All Vehicles Scam

Another suspicious factor is the outrageous HP claims which often also accompany fake scam chips:

Outrageous-HP-and-MPG-Claims-from-the-Fuel-Pro-Max-Chip-review
Outrageous-HP-and-MPG-Claims-from-the-Fuel-Pro-Max-Chip-review

Really? A fuel saver chip that provides gains of ‘up to 100HP and 6MPG’? Also, it is a Stage 2 fuel saver chip? That is a first. This is definitely a scam. The question is – does it do anything at all?

Internal Analysis

We purchased one of these modules from ebay and examined the inside of the module:
Fuel-Pro-Max-Circuit-Board-review

Our suspicions were immediately confirmed when we removed the yellow plastic top of the module. What we find underneath is the all too familiar circuit board shown above. It is identical to that of the previous Nitro OBD light blinker scams we reviewed previously. The red circle shows where the surface mount IC is located on the rear side of the PCB to prevent identification.

If you were with us for the NitroOBD Performance Chip Scam, you will notice this familiar circuit board design immediately. The circuit board is built around this hidden IC chip on the rear of the circuit board, which is an STM8S003F3 IC. Right away we see a problem here because if one pulls up the datasheet for the STM8S003F3 IC, we see from the manufacturer ST this chip has a maximum program memory size of 8KB:

STM-Datasheet-Fuel-Pro-Max
STM-Datasheet-Fuel-Pro-Max

Online searching shows that ECU maps for a vehicle will be at least 20KB in size or larger PER MAP! This is way too large for the STM8S003F3 IC to contain. So, if this is the case, there are no genuine vehicle maps onboard this module. What can be stored in such a small 8KB sized space then? It would be perfect for another fancy light blinker.

Operation

We connected the Fuel Pro Max chip as instructed to our test vehicle. We ran at least two tanks of gas with the module connected and noticed no improved power or fuel savings – just a blinking light show!

Fuel-Pro-Max-Chip-Lights-OBD2
Fuel-Pro-Max-Chip-Lights-OBD2

Another feature that confirms our suspicions was the fact that the lights blinked in an all too familiar pattern – exactly the same as the Nitro OBD scam chip did. It looks like our suspicions were correct.

Analysis

It is clear from our analysis so far that the Fuel Pro Max chip is not a performance chip or a fuel saver – it is simply just another Nitro OBD light blinker scam with a different design on the case. The circuit, like the numerous other light blinker scams, blinks to give the illusion of communicating with the vehicle ECU, but in fact, it does nothing. We would not recommend it as the Nitro OBD scam chips have been known to set error codes as well as cause random issues on some vehicles. The blinking signal can appear as random data to the ECU and permanently cause damage in some cases.

Conclusion

From our research and review, it is our opinion that the Fuel Pro Max chip module is yet another of the numerous light blinker scams. It may also cause ECU damage, so we suggest avoiding it at all costs. You definitely want to pass on this one!

GTE Stage 1 Performance Chip Module
From our Analysis:

From our research and review, it is our opinion that the GTE Stage 1 Performance Works! You will DEFINITELY want to try this!

Works!

Company Profile

The manufacturer is a company called GTE.

Their website, performancechiptuning.com, offers this and several other versions of their OBD and other performance products. The direct product page is here:

https://www.performancechiptuning.com/brands/GTE.html

Cost

The cost on the website at the time of this review was $149.95 USD for the GTE Performance Chip module, and $139.95 on eBay, which claims to provide Better Gas Mileage, enhanced pickup, power, and engine performance enhancements.

Cost is an average one, given that so far it appears to be a real chip, not a resistor or light blinker scam. It is an average price point. We purchased one from eBay for testing.

Product Appearance

GTE Performance Chip Tuning Stage 1 Chip
GTE Performance Chip Tuning Stage 1 Chip

The OBD performance module comes in the black case shown in the picture, It doesn’t need an OBD extension cable for placing the chip. The module plugs in directly to the vehicle OBD port.

Installation:

Installation steps were fairly straightforward:

“Step 1: Locate your OBD2 port.

Step 2: Insert stage 1 into your vehicle’s port while the vehicle is in off position.

Step 3: Insert vehicle key and turn the vehicle switch one position (or press your start button) without starting the vehicle. Your dash gauges will turn on. The GTE Stage 1 Performance Chip module needs about 5-10 seconds in this stage to transmit data from your vehicle’s ECU. After 10 seconds, you can start the vehicle normally.

Step 4: Once your vehicle is started for the first time, the GTE Stage 1 Performance Chip module begins a learning process. This process involves gathering data from your onboard computer and transmitting overrides to your ECU for performance and fuel economy improvements. Results can take up to 2 weeks of normal driving to fully complete. ”

Sounds different than most previous modules we tested – Let’s see if it works.

Internal Analysis

After removing the cover from the module – we see a much more complex circuit board than most of the performance chips- Also, note there is a button, but it has no hole cut through the case. Which is meant to be only for programming or testing purposes.

The  IC has a JDM-USA Rev. 6.0 label on it. After doing several tests such as Program Memory type, CAN protocol, Program Max Memory Size, and Max CPU Speed and after all test have been made, we determined that the Chip installed is a JDM/Microchip version of the PIC16F59 with improved Programming Memory to 24KB and CAN Bus support verified through our lab tests. We have seen this relabeling from Microchip in other computer related parts such as video cards. However, we are not here to criticize how Microchip handles custom build chips so we are moving forward.

So far, this board appears to possibly have the capability to do what is claimed:

We examined the OBD connections from the connector to the circuit board and the following nine pins are connected: 2,4,5,6,7,10,14,15,16.

Let’s  check the OBD protocols and which pins they require:

http://www.pfdiagnose.com/FAQ1.html
http://www.pfdiagnose.com/FAQ1.html

From this chart, we see the following protocols and which pins must be present for them to be used:

CAN – 4, 6, 14, 16

PWM -2, 4, 5, 10, 16

VPW – 2, 4, 5, 16

ISO – 4, 5, 7, 16

So we can conclude from this that the GTE Stage 1 Performance Chip module:

HAS all OBD connections to the CAN protocol

HAS all OBD connections for the PWM protocol

HAS all OBD connections for the ISO protocol

HAS all OBD connections for the VPW protocol

From these connections, the GTE Stage 1 Performance Chip Module does have the capability to interface to any of these protocols. According to the product information, the company claims it is custom programmed for use with only one vehicle. For use on another vehicle, it must be reprogrammed.

Operation

We connected the GTE Stage 1 Performance Chip Module to our BMW 3 Series 2003 3.0L as instructed and the lights came on as expected:

GTE Stage 1 Performance Chip Module working Power Link and Data Lights
GTE Stage 1 Performance Chip Module working Power Link and Data Lights

For about 1 week we drove only a few miles and did notice a definite improvement in throttle response and pick up power. In addition, the idle and overall handling of the engine did seem to be smoother. We tested in a large run and noticed we had gained almost 3MPG on fuel economy.

Analysis

It is clear from our analysis so far that the GTE Stage 1 Performance Chip Module is capable of delivering real gains and is a good choice for those seeking a general tuning solution.

Nitro OBD2 / Eco OBD Chips

nitro obd2 chip
Fuel Pro Max Chip
From our Analysis:

From our research and review, it is our opinion that the NitroOBD / EcoOBD OBD module performance chip is a scam. It may also cause ECU damage, as reported by some users on the net, so we suggest avoiding it at all costs. It is a nice light show at best, damaging at worst. You want to pass on this one!

Scam!

Company Profile

The manufacturer is a company called ‘Nicolay’, according to the packaging. However, we were unable to find a website or real company under this name. Perhaps it is a generic brand name?

Cost

The cost averages from the $3USD range, up to $25USD, depending on the source, eBay, Aliexpress, Amazon, etc. The cost is a very suspicious factor to us, as no genuine tuning product can be manufactured this cheaply.

Product Appearance

The OBD tuner modules come in four different colors, and they claim each is for a different type of engine:

YELLOW Case – Performance Boost For Benzine (Gasoline) Engines

RED Case – Performance Boost For Diesel Engines

GREEN Case – Fuel Saving for Benzine (Gasoline) Engines

BLUE Case – Fuel Saving for Diesel Engines

We will examine the most common Yellow module first:

nitro-obd
nitro-obd

The product instructions state the following:

  1. NitroOBD2 Chip Tuning Box for Diesel and Benzine Cars, make your vehicle Lower Fuel and Lower Emission, 1. Pull the Car Key out from the ignition. 2. Find OBD2 connector(*) in your car and Plug in NitroOBD2 Chip Tuning Box
  2. 2. 3. Insert the key into the ignition and twist the key to the first stage. (Do not start the car) 4. Press the reset buttom for about 5 sec. After releasing the buttom, just wait for a while about 30-54 sec. (NitroOBD2 Chip Tuning Box will communicate and establish connection with ECU) 5. Start up the engine. 6. NitroOBD2 Chip Tuning Box will recognize your vehicle and your driving habits, after around 200 km/150 miles driving and thus NitroOBD2 Performance Chip Tuning Box will adjust itself to match your car perfectly for more fuel saving.

The instructions claim to have vehicle maps onboard to allow the device to optimize the vehicle performance when connected to the OBD port.

Internal Analysis

We purchased a few of these modules from different sources, and ended up with a few different circuit boards inside:

NITRO-OBD-PCB-compare
NITRO-OBD-PCB-compare

Aliexpress even shows three different versions of circuit boards:

Nitro-OBD-PCBs-Aliexpress
Nitro-OBD-PCBs-Aliexpress

They show a checkmark beside the first one, while the others have an ‘X’ beside them. While they say the first is best, the middle board is actually the original version, and was seen in the earliest NitroOBD modules. Why make the first one appear to be the best? Answer: Simple – it is the one they are tying to sell you!

The first circuit board is built around a PIC16F59 IC:

Nitro-OBD
Nitro-OBD

Right away we see a problem here, because if one pulls the datasheet for the PIC16F59 IC, we can see from the manufacturer, Microchip, that this chip has a maximum program memory size of 3KB:

PIC16F59 Datasheet car chip reviews
PIC16F59 Datasheet car chip reviews

From several searches, we verified that ECU maps for a vehicle will be at least 20KB or larger PER MAP! This is way too large for the PIC16F59 IC to contain. So, if this is the case, there are no genuine vehicle maps onboard the module. What can be stored in such a small 3KB sized space then? We have our own suspicion.

The second circuit board is built around a hidden IC on the back of the PCB:

NITRO-OBD-hidden-IC
NITRO-OBD-hidden-IC

After deeper inspection, we see that this chip is a STM8S003F3, a value line IC manufactured by ST. The datasheet shows this IC has only 8KB of program memory, also too small for genuine vehicle maps

Operation

We connected the Nitro OBD module to our 2012 BMW 530i 3.0L L6 as shown in the instruction sheet and lights began to blink:

Another feature that confirms our suspicions was the fact that the lights blinked in an all too familiar pattern – exactly the same as the Nitro OBD scam chip did. It looks like our suspicions were correct.

We followed the instructions and drove at least 200+ miles to give it the benefit of the doubt, and…… nothing. No power increase, no mileage increase. We did, however, see a neat light show!

Nitro OBD lights
Nitro OBD lights

Analysis

It is clear from our analysis so far that the NitroOBD module does not have the physical capacity to hold real vehicle ECU maps. 3KB of memory IS large enough for a light blinker program, however, and we believe this is exactly what it truly is – a light blinker in different colored cases. The circuit appears to monitor the pins from the OBD port and the small microprocessor blinks the lights when activity is detected, giving the appearance of the chip’s operation. While some users online claim to have seen small gains in pickup or fuel economy, we believe this is due to either the placebo effect or another vehicle / environmental factors. While we did not get any error codes set by our NitroOBD module, others claim it does set error codes, and if so, this is a major red flag.

The second issue is the claim that it fits SEVERAL different vehicles – this is not possible, even for one vehicle, with such a small 3KB program capacity.

The third issue is that the same circuit is used in all different colored cases we opened – red, yellow, green, blue – it did not matter. We found the same boards as in the yellow version, and, the same ICs.

Conclusion

From our research and review, it is our opinion that the NitroOBD / EcoOBD module performance chip is a scam. It may also cause ECU damage, as reported by some users on the net, so we suggest avoiding it at all costs. It is a nice light show at best, damaging at worst. You want to pass on this one!
